mammoth-plate albumen print, mounted, with printed title and Lawrence & Houseworth publishers’ information on the mount, the publisher’s letterpress ‘Photographic Views of California Scenery’ label on the reverse, framed, 1864, printed between 1864 and 1870 Please note the colors and shades in the online catalogue illustration may vary depending on screen settings. Grading this albumen print on a scale of 1 to 10 - a 10 being a print that has rich, deep dark tones and highlights that retain all their original detail - this print rates a strong 8 . The darks are robust and the midtones show a high level of detail. The highlights appear to be yellowed somewhat. This print is in generally very good condition. Deposits of old retouching are visible throughout. Under examination in raking light, there are subtle scuffs and hairline scratches. An oval-shaped deposit at the lower right edge appears somewhat silvery; it may be retouching that has discolored. There is occasional edge wear and tiny-to-small chips to the emulsion in several places. The sky area shows faint streaks; this is due to features of the glass negatives from which the print was made and is not a condition issue on the print itself. The photograph is mounted to thick board upon which is printed the image's title and the publishers' credit and address. The mount is soiled and age-darkened, particularly along the edges. The edges are brittle and there are some losses and small tears, none of which intrude upon the photograph. On the reverse of the mount is the publisher's Photographic Views of California Scenery letterpress label. It reads ‘Photographic Views of California Scenery, 22 x 28 inches; also, Stereoscopic and Album Sizes. Published by Lawrence & Houseworth, 317 and 319 Montgomery Street, San Francisco.
